The Police Covenant Explained
The Police Covenant is a national pledge recognising the bravery, commitment and sacrifices of people who work or have worked in policing and the impact on their families.
What the Covenant Is Intended to Do
The Home Office describes the Covenant as recognition by government, policing and society of the sacrifices made by the police workforce. It aims to ensure that current and former members of the workforce in England and Wales are not disadvantaged because of their service.
Three Recurring Themes
- Health and wellbeing: improving support for the physical and psychological effects of police work.
- Physical protection: recognising risks faced by officers and staff and improving the response to harm.
- Families and leavers: acknowledging the effect of policing on families and people leaving the service.
2025 Annual Report
The Police Covenant annual report published in February 2026 describes continuing work on wellbeing, family support, physical protection and the position of people leaving policing.
